We don’t have the same parents, we don’t work in the same industry, we’re completely different in size, we don’t even look alike … in fact, we used to joke that the oldest brother looks like an Indonesian … the younger brother a Korean …. errrr, and me, the youngest and only sister, a non-Viet Southeast Asian girl … The biggest common thing that we share is …. the love for all the delicious snail/clam/scallop/oyster dishes ….
The brother-sisterhood started way back in 2000 …. when I ran into Skydunk, my 2nd brother in that Thank-You Dinner for the Southeast Asian Youth Program volunteers on the gigantic Nippon Maru. It was the first time we talked as alumni …. it’s funny how we both had majored in English and studied with the same teachers of English in the same junior high and senior high schools and never talked. All I knew was that he was a popular student in both schools cos of his cool unique name and his English proficiency … and so we talked ….
Not long after that night, I got to know my 1st bro as he replied to Skydunk’s email about Hollow Man being shown @ Cinebox … At that time, his screen name was MMMpal … though they looked kinda weird at first, it was interesting to know what those abbreviations stood for … they captured well my bro’s biggest passion …. It turned out that Neo, as he used to call himself afterwards, was (and still heartily is) into movies – something completely different from his core study subject – architecture.
Soon afterwards, we became brothers and sister despite the fact that I’m not even 1% knowledgeable about movies as much as Neo is, or about computers as much as Skydunk is … Though I’m not a skinny girl, I always feel safe to walk by my bros cos I’m only half their sizes … hehe …. Got lots to say about these cool bros … but ‘ll save it for some other day … it’s already mid night now ….
I couldn’t recall how it worked out the way it did … all I know now is that everytime we meet, the venue is always a snail place …. and the three of us would literally be ordering (and of course, finishing) dishes after dishes of those tiny little snails/clams blah blah blah …
As Neo’s only here for another week, we’re gonna meet up tomorrow ….. Where will we be heading? Errr ….
